Bangor Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-95 Travelers

Traffic & Timing: The I-395 split can be confusing - stay left for I-95 North, right for coastal route to Ellsworth/Bar Harbor. Avoid passing through around 3-4 PM on weekdays when the base (Bangor Air National Guard) shifts change. Summer Friday afternoons (June-August) get backed up with Bar Harbor traffic.

Beware of Speed Traps. Maine State Police are active on this stretch, especially between Bangor and Newport. Speed limit drops quickly as you enter the city - watch for changes from 70 to 50 mph.

Winter Driving: This section can get icy fast - it's more exposed than southern Maine. Moose are a real danger from dusk to dawn, especially May-October. North of Bangor, stay alert.

Gas & Food Strategy: Fill up in Bangor if you're heading north - it's your last chance for competitive prices and lots of options. Gas gets noticeably more expensive as you head toward the County. Dysart's (Exit 180) is a legendary trucker stop with huge portions and homemade pies. Open 24/7 and very reliable.
